Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HARRY D. LEITH and MILTON ARTHUR Cox, citizens of the United States, residing at Stuart, county of Guthrie, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ilm-Reel Transportation-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to shipping cases and particularly to a transportation box for film reels and slides such as are used in moving picture theaters.

The object of our invention is to provide a transportation case for film reels and lantern slides which shall be adapted to contain all of the reels and slides necessary for a complete performance or show.

A further and particular object of our invention is to provide a device as mentioned in which the film reels and slides may be readily and quickly packed or unpacked, safely transported and conveniently handled.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view our invention consists generally in a box formed of any suitable material, open at the side and provided with a hinged closure. The box is provided with a lining of tin or other sheet metal, which lining is shaped to divide the box into a large compartment for the film reels and a small compartment containing a drawer for song slides. The closure is provided with a sheet metal facing opposite the film reel compartment and the facing is preferably provided with a peripheral flange which telescopes about the edge of the lining of the larger compartment forming a dust and dampness proof closure. The slide draw is arranged above the reel compartment and the upper edge of the above mentioned flange may be utilized for securely holding the draw to prevent movement of the same during transportation which would tend to break the slides. A band or metal strip encircles the case binding the same together and formed with lugs or cars to receive a bail.

Our invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Our invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective-view of a transportation box embodying our invention in its preferred form and illustrating the same in opened position, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box in closed position, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the box, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the outer casing which may be made of wood or any suitable material. The casing comprises a lower portion 2 which is square in vertical longitudinal section and of sufficient dimensions to snugly contain the film reels, that is its height and breadth are substantially equal to the diameter of the reels and its depth sufficient for two, three or four reels as desired, and an upper portion 3 to contain the picture song slides. The lower portion of the casing comprises a bottom 4 and the parallel vertical sides 5 which are equal in height and width to the length and width of the bottom. The upper portion comprises a diagonally disposed side portion 6 and the horizzontal top 7 which is parallel with the bottom 4. The casing is provided with a back 8 and the front thereof is open and provided with a hinged door or closure 9 of the size and shape adapted to cover both the upper and lower compartments. The inner faces of the bottom 4 and the sides 5 are covered with tin or other sheet metal as is also the back 8 to the height of the sides 2 forminga lining 10 for the lower compartment. The tin or sheet metal lining is extended horizontally from the upper edge of one side to the other forming a partition 11 which separates the upper and lower compartments.

The upper compartment 3 is provided with a pair of vertical partitions 12-12 which extend downwardly from the ends of the top 7 to the partition 11 forming a rectangular drawer space 13 to contain a picture or song slide drawer 14, said drawer being preferably made of sheet metal. The partitions 12 are preferably formed of one sheet of metal bent to form a horizontal upper portion 15 constituting an upper lining for the space 13 and arranged upon the inner face of the top 7, the vertical sides or partitions 12 and the bottom flanges 16 which preferably extend outwardly and are secured to the upper face of the partition 11; 7 It will be noticed that by the construction above described a pair of triangular vacant spaces 17 are formed at each side of the drawer space 13 and by arranging the flanges 16 in these spaces they do not 'interfere with the drawer.

The door or closure 9 is formed of wood or whatever material the outer casing is composed of. If the partitions 12 extend to the face of the device as shown in Fig. 1 the lower edges of the partitions are notched as at 22 to receive; the flange 20, however this is not essential as the partitions may be made short enough to avoid notching.

' To strengthen the device a metal band 23 is extended about the bottom, sides and top of the casing and secured thereto as by nails or rivets 24. The portion of the band 23 upon the, top 7 of the device is bent upwardly at two points forming ears or lugs 25 which are perforated to receive a handle or bail 26. The band is doubled upon itself as shown clearly in the drawings to avoid breaking the continuity of the same and the; f rivets or nails are arranged close to the ears Q thus formed uponboth sides of the same to prevent spreading of the band.

Copies of this patent may be obtained for Hooks or latches 27 are provided for the closure 9 and a lock, not shown, may also be provided to prevent opening the device during transportation.

It will be seen that when the film reels and the slides are in the case they are completely surrounded by the sheet metal which is essential, the lining 10, partition 11 and facing 19 completely surrounding the lower compartment and the reels therein and the bottom, sides and ends of the drawer 14 together with the facing 15 on the inner side of the top 7 completely surrounding the slides.

The depth of the casing may be proportioned to hold two, three or four reels and the necessary slides to accommodate a complete shipment to a theater requiring any ordinary amount of material.

Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A transportation box for the purpose mentioned comprising a casing open at the front and consisting of a bottom, a pair of side members equal in length to that of the bottom and at right angles thereto, diagonally disposed side members at the upper .ends of the first said side members and a top parallel with the bottom and connecting the upper end of the upper side members, and a back, a sheet metal lining for said bottom, the first said side members and the back to the height of said side members, a horizontal sheet metal partition extending transversely of said casing at the upper ends of with the front of the compartment below said horizontal partition, substantially as described.
