To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, JOSEPH KoNresBnnG and JOSEPH FoRsHErM, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, and of Great Neck, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Attaching Handles to Umbrella or other Rods, of which the following is a specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a novel device for attaching a handle to umbrella or other rods, said device particularly includingmeans for securely fastening a rod receiving socket piece within the handle socket without the use of glue and without the necessity of providing a special form of socket .in the handle.

A further object of our invention is to provide a device by means of which the usual form of rod can be attached to the handle, thus obviating the necessity of providing a special form of r'od or the provision of a fastening device carried by the rod.

Our invention consists in a device of the above character comprising a socket piece and a U-shaped locking member having its branches externally serrated, said serrated portions being arranged to be forced into the walls of the socket in the handle for locking the socket piece in position within the handle.

Our invention further consists in providing a device of the abovecharacter in which the parts are so arranged that when the rod is inserted within the socket piece, the U-shaped lockingmember is held against withdrawal from its interlocking engagement with the walls of the holder socket.

Figure 1 represents in side elevation a handle attached to an umbrella or like rod. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail longitudinal central section through the handle and its attaching device. the rod being shown in full lines. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 2, the rod clamping nut and the socket piece and U- shaped locking member being shown partly in full lines and partly in section. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 6 is a detail side view of the socket piece. Fig. 7 is a detail View in perspective of the U-shaped locking member, and Fig. 8 is a detail View partially in section of the rod clamping nut.

The rod l may be the rod of an umbrella, a parasol, or any other article to which a handle might be applied. The handle 2 may be made in any desired shape and size, which handle is provided with the usual rod receiving socket 3.

The socket piece is denoted by 4, which socket piece is provided with oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slots 5 leading from a point near the inner end or bottom of the socket piece to a point near the outer end of the socket piece in alinement with the inner end of the handle 2 when the socket piece is inserted within the socket 3. Oppositely arranged slits 6 leading from the outer end of the socket piece 4 to the slots 5, divide the socket piece. The divided port-ions of the socket piece 4, eX- terior to the handle 2, are screw-threaded as shown at 7, for receiving a rod clamping nut 8. The screw-threaded bore of the nut 8 and the screw-threaded portions 7 of the socket piece are slightly tapered so that as the nut 8 is screwed home, it will draw the split ends of the socket piece 4 snugly into engagement with the rod 1 for locking the rod in the socket piece. y

The device for locking the socket piece in the socket is constructed and arranged as follows: A strip of metal, preferably of thinner gage than the metal which forms the socket piece 4, is bent to form a U- shaped locking member 9, the branches 10 of which are externally serrated, preferably by bending the edges of the branches outwardly and notching the same to form two rows of serrations 11 along each of the branches 10. These branches 10 extend along within the elongated slots 5 in the socket piece 4, and their connecting portion extends transversely across the socket piece near the inner end thereof. For facilitating the insertion of the U-shaped locking member, and for properly positioning the member, the outer ends of its branches 10 are provided with outwardly projecting ears 12 interposed between the inner end of the handle and the rod clamping nut S. These branches 10 of the U-shaped locking member 9, are forced back slightly into the interior of the socket piece 4, as the socket piece and locking member are inserted into the socket 3 in the handle. A plunger tted to the bore of the socket piece may then be inserted into the socket piece, thus forcing the branches 10 outwardly and thereby causing their serrated portions ll to enter the walls of the socket in the handle. The plunger or other tool may then be removed. When the rod l is inserted into the socket piece, it will snugly fit Within the same, thus absolutely preventing t-he Withdrawal of the branches of the locking member from their engagement With the Walls of the socket in the handle.

It Will be seen that the handle attaching device, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, Will lock the socket piece absolutely in the handle Without thel use of glue, and also Without the necessity of providing a special form ot socket in the handle. It Will also be seen that a device of this character will permit the very ready attachment and removal of the handle. It Will also be seen that an ordinary rod can be used in connection With the socket piece, thus obviating the necessity of providing a fastening device on the rod or a special form of rod.

It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention; hence We do not Wish to limit ourselves strictly to the construction herein set forth, but

Vhat We claim is:

l. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the handle socket, having an exposed split screw-threaded end and a nut vengaging the same for clamping the rod to the socket piece, a locking member carried by the socket piece and means arranged to enter the socket piece for forcing the locking member into engagement With the Walls of the handle socket for locking the socket piece against removal therefrom.

2. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the handle socket, having an exposed split screwthreaded end and a nut engaging the same for clamping the rod to the socket piece, a separate locking member carried by the socket piece and having a serrated portion and means arranged to enter the socket piece for forcing the serrated portion into the Wall of the handle socket.

3. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the handle socket, having an exposed split screwthreaded end and a nut engaging the same for clamping the rod to the socket piece, said socket piece having oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slots, a U-shaped locking member carried by the socket piece and having its externally serrated branches extending' along said slots and means arranged to enter the socket piece for forcing the serrated branches of the locking member into engagement With the walls of the handle socket.

4. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching' an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the handle socket, said socket piece having oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slot-s, a U-shaped locking member carried by the socket piece and having its externally serrated branches extending along said slots, means arranged to enter the socket piece for forcing the serrated branches of the locking member into engagement with the Walls of the handle socket, said branches being provided With positioning ears exterior to the handle socket. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the handle socket, said socket piece having oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slots, a U-shaped locking member carried by the socket piece and having its externally serrated branches extending along said slots, and means arranged to enter the socket piece for forcing the serrated branches into engagement with the Walls of the handle socket, said locking member being held against Withdrawal by the insertion of the umbrella or other rod into the socket piece.

6. A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located in the h andle socket with a portion of the socket piece exposed, said socket piece having oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slots Within the handle socket and having its exposed portion split and screw threaded, a clamping nut engaged With the said exposed portion Jfor clamping the rod to the socket piece, a U-shaped locking member carried by the socket piece and having its externally serrated branches extending along said slots and means for forcing the serrated branches into engagement with the Walls of the handle socket Jfor locking the socket piece in the handle.

7 A handle having a socket, a device for attaching an umbrella or other rod thereto comprising a socket piece located 1n the h andle socket With a portion of the socket piece exposed, said exposed portion being split and screw threaded, a nut engaging the eX- posed portion for clamping the rod to the socket piece, said socket piece having oppositely arranged longitudinally elongated slots, a U-shaped looking member carried by the socket piece having its externally serrated branches extending along said slots and means for forcing the serrated branches into engagement With the Walls of the handle socket for looking the socket piece in thel handle, said branches being provided With positioning ears interposed between the clamping nut and the handle.
