To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH SALE, jeweler by appointment to the court, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at 26 Achenbachstrasse, Dusseldorf, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Examination of Precious Stones, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an apparatus, which will enable an accurate and convenient examination of precious stones, pearls and the like from all sides.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is exemplified in two side elevations (Figures 1 and 2), one transverse section (Fig. 8) and one plan view (Fig. 4).
The apparatus consists of a magnifying glass 1 fitted on a stand of known type. To the legs of this stand is rigidly secured a ring a and in this ring a another ring I) is pivoted in such a manner around trun nions that it may be turned around in a complete circle. Such rotation of the ring 6 is efiected by means of the trunnions a. In each ring 6 is fitted another ring 0 in such a manner that it can rotate therein. To ring 6 are fitted three elastic claws is, which are coiled around pins 2' of said ring and bear with their arms 6 against the flange of the ring Z). These claws consist of very thin steel wire and their ends, which are turned toward each other are bifurcated. The ring 0 fitted in ring 6 is provided with pins or stops (Z which will strike against the elastic claws 70 when the ring 0 is rotated in ring I); thereby the said claws will be forced outward contrary to their elastic tendency.
For facilitating the rotation ofring c in ring 6, the said ring 0 is fitted with a handle it which is arranged close to the handle 9, toward which it is pressed for efiecting the. rotation. Before the article to be examined is placed in the grip of the claws, these are moved apart by the rotation of ring 0; then Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

the said article is held in position whereupon the ring 0 is released and the elastic claws will grip the article in a secure manner,-whatever shape it may have, and so that they will practically not obstruct a careful examination. The rings 5 and 0 may now be turned and rotated together with the article under inspection, so that the latter is visible from all sides.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a magnifying glass carried thereby, a ring pivoted to the stand, a plurality of claws carried by the ring, and means for spreading said claws.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a magnifying glass carried thereby, a first ring pivoted to the stand, a plurality of resilient claws carried by said first ring, a second ring rotatable in the first ring, and stops on the second ring adapted to engage the claws.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a magnifying glass carried thereby, a ring pivoted to the stand, a plurality of pins secured to the ring, a plurality of resilient claws engaging said pins and bearing against the ring, and means for spreading said claws.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a magnifying glass carried thereby, an annular frame mounted on the stand, a ring hung in said frame, a plurality of claws carried by the ring and means for spreading said claws.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a magnifying glass carried thereby, an annular frame mounted on the stand, a first ring hung in said frame, a plurality of resilient claws carried by said first ring, a second ring rotatable in the first ring, and stops on the second ring adapted to engage the claws.
