P. E. MACK. OIL PUMP. APPLICATION FILED 1111.19, 1911.

UIQTTED @TATES PATENT FFIE PERRY E. MACK, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
OIL-PUMP.
Serial No. 603,424.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, PERRY E. MACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to apparatus for automatically feeding oil or the like in predetermined quantities to hearings or parts to be lubricated. Its main objects are to produce a durable oil pump having few and simple parts, requiring little or no care or attention, and reliable in operation, to provide such a pump with a simple adjustment for varying the feed if desired, and generally to simplify and improve the construction and operation of lubricating pumps of this class.
It consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing like parts are designated by the same characters in the several figures.
Figure 1 is an axial section on the line 11, Fig. 2, of a pump embodying the invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections thereof on the lines 22, and 33, re-
spectively, Fig. 1.
The pump barrel or cylinder (1, which may be formed integrally with a head Z) at one end and closed by a screw cap or removable head 0 at the other end, has on opposite sides thereof adjacent to the head 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, suction and discharge ports (Z and e, which areconnected by pipes (not shown) or otherwise, with an oil reservoir on the one hand and with one or more bearings or parts to be lubricated on the other hand.
A reciprocable and rotatable piston or plunger f fitted in the cylinder a, is formed on one side at the end adjacent to the head 6 with a valve and cam projection g, which is adapted to alternately cover and uncover the ports (Z and 6 when the plunger is rotated. The outer end of this projection, which is rounded or inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, is adapted by engagement with an internal abutment in the cylinder to impart a reciprocating movement to the plunger as it is turned. For the purpose of varying the stroke of the plunger and the quantity of oil fed by the pump at each stroke of the plunger, said abutment is made adjustable and may consist, as shown in Fig. 1, of a screw it threaded in the head 6 of the cylinder parallel with itsaxis and secured in adjusted position by a lock nut By this means the axial movement of the plunger may be varied from Zero to full stroke, and a fine adjustment of the feed effected without opening or stopping the pump, the head of the screw h being accessible outside the cylinder a.
The plunger may be moved toward the head 6 and held in engagement therewith or with the screw it, by any suitable means, as by gravity if the cylinder is mounted with its head 6 downward, or in other positions by a spring j, hearing at one end against the closed head of the plunger, which may be hollow or tubular, and at the other end against the cap or head 0 or a cylindrical seat is loosely fitted in the plunger and centrally pivoted on said cap or head, as shown in Fig. 1.
Various means may be employed to rotate the plunger. A worm Z fitted to turn in a transverse boX or enlargement m of the cylinder and meshing with elongated gear teeth 1?. in the plunger, is shown in Figs. 1 and 3 for this purpose. The action of the worm in turning the plunger also tends to thrust it toward the head 2) and hold the projection g in engagement therewith and with the screw it.
The cylinder may be flattened on one side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for attachment to a support, or may have other provision for mounting it according to circumstances.
In the operation of the pump, the plunger 7 being turned by the worm Z in the direction indicated by arrows, Figs. 2 and 3, the projection 9 while it closes the discharge port 6, engages with the screw it and thrusts the plunger away from the head Z2, thereby drawing oil from the reservoir through the suction port 03 into the cylinder. As said projection passes out of engagement with the screw 72, it covers the suction port (Z and uncovers the discharge port 6. Thereupon the spring j thrusts the plunger back toward the head 6 and forces the oil in the cylinder out through the port 6.
The quantity of oil drawn into and discharged from the cylinder with each complete revolution and reciprocation of the piston is determined and the feed is regulated by the adjustment of the screw it. The more said screw is withdrawn, the less will be the quantity of oil pumped. When the tip of the screw is set flush with or outside the inner face of the cylinder head 6, there will be no reciprocation of the plunger and hence no feed of oil.
Various modifications in the construction and arrangement of parts of the pump may be made without materially afiecting its mode of operation and without departing from the principle of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a pump the combination of a cylinder having suction and discharge ports and an inwardly projecting abutment, a piston fitted to simultaneously reciprocate lengthwise and to rotate in said cylinder and provided with a valve and cam projection adapted to alternately cover and uncover said ports and by engagement with said abutment to cause the reciprocation of the plunger, and means for rotating the plunger.
2. In a pump the combination of a cylinder having suction and discharge ports and an internal abutment, a reciprocating and rotary plunger fitted in said cylinder and provided with a valve and cam projection adapted to alternately open and close said ports and by engagement with said abutment to thrust the plunger away from the adjacentcylinder head, and a spring tend ing to move the plunger in the opposite direction.
3. In a pump the combination of a cylinder having suction and discharge ports and an internal abutment adjustable lengthwise of the cylinder, a reciprocating and rotary plunger fitted in said cylinder and provided at one end with a valve and cam projection which is adapted to alternately open and close said ports and by engagement with said abutment to move the plunger lengthwise, and means for rotating the plunger.
4. In a pump the combination of a cylinder having suction and discharge ports and an internal abutment, a reciprocating and rotary plunger fitted in said cylinder and provided with elongated gear teeth and with a valve and cam projection adapted to alternately open and close said ports and by engagement with said abutment to move the plunger lengthwise, and a Worm arranged transversely to the axis 01": the cylinder in mesh with the gear teeth of the plunger.
In witness whereof I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
