Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 26, 1909. Serial No. 486,037.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed fastenings and more particularly to fastening devices adapted to secure the side rails to the head and foot boards, generally known as corner fastenings.
The object of my invention is to provide a corner fastening consisting of two parts one of which is set in to the head or foot board, as the case may be, and the other secured to the side rail, the two parts being adapted to interlock and form a perfect connection in which is combined rigidity, strength and durability.
Another object of my invention is to provide a corner fastening for beds, and to construct the same in an exceedingly cheap and simple manner. One by means of which a bed may be easily and quickly set up or taken down, and will always efliciently perform all of its intended functions.
IVith these objects in View and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the particular construction of the two parts, and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating my invention as applied parts not deemed essential being broken away.- Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views illustrating the parts locked together.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of a head board, and 2 a portion of a side rail. Counter-sunk in the head board is casing 3, consisting of an angle iron, having one side longer than the other and bent at right angles to the respective sides, as shown at 3, so as to form a three sided casing adapted to be held in position by a series of screws 4, and provided in its base and end wall with slots 5, and 6, the object of which will be hereinafter explained. It is to be understood that the end wall may be formed integral with either side, or that the entire casing may be cast in one piece in substantially the form shown in Fig. 3:
Mounted upon or set into the side rail 2, is a plate 7, held in position by a series of screws 8, and provided upon its outer end with an integral arm 9, which is at right angles there to and curved upward as shown at 10, so as to engage the slot 6. This arm also carries a downwardly projecting lug 11, adapted to engage the slot 5, and thereby lock the two parts together. It will be readily seen that in order to lock the two parts together it is necessary to tilt or twist the side rail over until the curved end of the arm 9 engages the slot 6, after which it is tilted back and the lug 11, is received by the slot 5, which securely locks the parts together, the fittings being sufliciently snug to form a rigid connection.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a corner fastening, a casing having three walls, means for securing the casing in position, a slot in the base of the casing, a slot in the end wall, a plate an arm at right angles to and integral with the plate, the free end of the arm being curved upward, a downwardly projecting lug integral with the arm, the curved end of the arm being adapted to engage the slot in the end wall, and the lug being adapted to engage the slot in the base, substantially as specified.
