SKIRT-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. atented Aug. 22, 1911.
Application filed March 11, 1911. Serial No 613,803.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, tirmupm K. \VuisoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ladysmith, in the eounty ot .ltusk and State 0'! \t'iseonsin. have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-t rages. ot which the Following is a speeitieatiou.
The present invention eousists ol :1 very simple deviee. partieularly tor ladies use in dress-making operations tor 'laeilitating proper gaging oi the length of skirts. lrimarily Sptlhlllg', the invention eomprises support earr \"in 2 the adjustable arm, and upon the arm is mounted a movable marker so ar 'anged that it may be readily operated by the person trying on a skirt. without the assistanee ot' a helper.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reterenee is to he had to the following description and to the :u-eompanyiug drawings, in whieh Figure 1 is a. perspeetive view showing a skirt gage in position tor aetual use. and embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the deviee bringing out more elearly the t'orm ot' eertain parts.
'lhroughout the following detail deseription and on the several figures ot the drawings, similar parts are re'lt'erred to by like re'tereuee characters.
Describing the invention speeitieally, and referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a verti- *al guide member, to a side ol whieh is eured a vertieal elongated braeket having the elamp 2:3 by whieh it may be seeurely attaehed to a table A t any analogous snpport. The guide 'i has mounted thereon a vertie: lly movable arm 4-, having a vertieal aperture through whieh the member 1. passes, the end of the arm adjaeent to said aperture being slotted to provide spring elements seeured together by means of a suitable tastening 5, the latter being adapted to be tightened or loosened so as to hold the arm l: at a predetermined adjustment, or prompt movement thereof on the guide l, respectively, as 'lound desirable in the use of the deviee.
The outer or free end portion of the arm 4t has a horizontal slot (3 receiving therein the inner end portion of a movable marker T, a pivotal t'astening 1t passing \ertieally through the slotted portion (3 ot the arm to eonneet the parts and 7.
At its outer end the marker is bitur eated to Form spaeed spring members 51 whieh direetly engage amt hold the marking ehalk. The elamping aetion ot the members it against the ehalk is obtained by means ot a bolt 9 aml thumb nut '10 serewed on its lower end. The h ad ol the bolt 9 is enlarged to provide a knob adapted to be grasped by the operator in order to move the marker 7 laek and 'l orth in making a mark on the skirt at the proper point ae eordiug to the adjustment of tl arm t.
Spanning the slot (3 ol" thi arm l at opposite sides thereof are the U-shaped stops l9 whit-h limit the lateral movement of the marker 7 in a horizontal plane.
The present invention is an exeeediugly simple deviee whieh may be eheaply produeed and plaeed on the market so as to be within the means ot the ordinary dressmaker or woman having use tor the invention in sewing operations.
The arm -l has a vertieal slot 11 through whieh the pivot 11 passes. whereby movement ot' the member 7. longitiulinally ot the ai'm l. in manipulating the marker, is permitted.
tl aviug thus deseribed the invention, whatis elaimed as new is:
In a skirt gage, the eombiuation ot a vertieal galide. an arm adjustably seeured at. one end to said guide. and having its outer end provided with a horizontal slot. a marker having an end reeeived in said slot. a pivotal eonneetion between the marker and the arm. U-shaped stops spanning the slot of the arm at opposite sides thereot and adapted to engage the marker, and limit its movement in a horizontal plane, and spring members at the outer end of the marker tor holding ehalk. and means tor drawing said spring members together eomprising a knob to be grasped in order to aetuate the marker.
in testimony whereol l allix my signature in presenee of two witnesses.
