DANIEL WILBURT SHEPHERD, OF POCATELLO, IDAHO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWIN D, HARRISON, OF POCATELLO, IDAHO.
nusr-rnoor STEM AND sLEEvE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
To all whom "it may concern;
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. SHEPHERD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pocatello, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Dust-Proof Stem and Sleeve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to open face watches, and its object is to provide a new and improved means for rendering the watch case dust-proof at the stem, to allow convenient adjustment of the stem for winding and setting purposes, and without danger of end shake or breaking.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a collar held in the pendant and receivingthe upper end of the split sleeve, pressed on by a spring contained in the said collar.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged face view of an open face watch case provided with the improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged trans verse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collar; Fig. i is a similar View of the cap; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of a modified form of the improvement.
In the pendant A of the watch case B, as shown in Fig. 2, fits snugly a collar C having in its upper portion a bore C and in its lower portion a larger bore C and through the portions C C extends the upper end of the stem D, screwed or otherwise secured to the crown E, mounted to turn and to slide on a cap F screwing on the upper threaded portion of the pendant A, the said cap having a roughened or knurled head F abutting against a shoulder A formed on the pendant A. The upper end of the collar G projects a distance above the pendant A, so that when the cap F is screwed in place, the top of the cap engages the upper end of the collar C, to form a tight joint with the same and to hold the collar C firmly in position in the pendant A.
On the stem D is mounted a split sleeve G, operating with the stem D in the usual manner, for holding the stem either in an innermost or winding up position or in an outermost or setting position. The upper end of the split sleeve Gr is provided with an annular bead G fitting into the bore 0 and the lower end of the collar O is bent or crimped inwardly after the sleeve G engages the bore C so that the bead G is adapted to be seated on the contracted lower end G of the collar C. A spring H is coiled in the bore C around the stem D and presses against the upper end of the sleeve G, so that the sleeve G is yieldingly mounted in the collar C. Now when the several parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the stem D is in the innermost or winding up position, and when the operator pulls on the crown E in an outward direction then the stem D is carried along into a setting position, the sleeve G being held against movement by the spring H. rangement described, the collar C and spring-pressed sleeve G render the stem D dust-proof, that is, they prevent dust from passing into the watch case by way of the pendant, and the several parts are held against rattling, as the spring H keeps the bead G, oroperly seated on the lower contracted end C of the collar C.
As shown in Fig. 5, the cap F is omitted, and in this case, the collar C screws in the pendant A, and contains in its boreC the spring H pressing the bead G of the sleeve G in firm contact with the contracted end C of the collar C. The crown E fits over the pendant A and is secured to the upper end of the stem D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A watch case provided with a pendant, a collar fitting into the said pendant and projecting beyond the upper end thereof, the collar having an enlarged bore in its lower portion and the lower end being contracted, a split sleeve having an external bead at its upper end extending into the said enlarged. bore, a spring in the said bore and pressing the said sleeve, a cap screwing Now by the aron the upper end of the said pendant and engaging the upper end of the said collar, a stem extending through the said sleeve, collar and cap and a crown on the outer end of the said stem and fitting over the said cap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscrlbing wltnesses.
DANIEL WILBURT SHEPHERD.
