BINDING BOOKS.
Application filed April as, 1910, Serial No. 557,697.
nomically binding pamphlets and books,
such as telephone books, like. I
A common method is to staple or stitch the leaves together, and then bind or cover the book by gluing a piece of heavy paper to the back. vVhere a book is used considerably, 'or subjected to any'rough usage, the cover comes ofi, or loosens, or becomes tornv at the corners along the back edge, and soon presents a frayed and ragged appearance, and sooner or later the cover is torn off.
By my method I provide a simple, practical substitute for gluing and stitch the cover on at the sametime the pad is stitched,
magazines, and the thus saving one operation and one handling of the book as over the old method where it was first necessary to-stitch the pad and then glue on the cover. Sometimes in addition to this the glued cover was stitched too, but
even then the cover was not secured on as well as by my method.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and.
claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in whichigure 1 is a perspective View partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a section of a receipt book.
A represents a 'pad or pile of leaves constituting the book to be bound.
2 is the cover, which maybe of any suitable material with a flexible back portion capable of being infolded one or more times with the ends of the leaves, as shown at 3. I

the cover being bound at the same time and by the single securing means 4:;
The chief feature of the invention is the forming of the infolded portions 3 of the cover, and their insertion into the back of .the book. If the book is a thin one a single infold would sufiic e; if the book is thicker,
there would usually be two of these infolds, near the top and bottom of the pad, but with a sufficient amount of the ends of the leaves,
represented at 5, embraced between an in fold 3 and a top or bottom cover so as to prevent the cover from being broken, at 6,
'. when bent over the stub and stitched. This method of" infolded cover is particularly useful 1n making up scrap books or stub receipt. books, or wherever it is desired to inshown in Fig. 2, the cover is provided with an infold 3, between the leaves A, the double thickness of the infolded part of the cover providing the necessary space to accommodate the'cards or papers which are inserted in between the leaves and book from bulging when filled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure byLetters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with the leaves, of a cover'having'a flexible back portion, said back'portion infolded with the ends of the leaves, and securing means passed through the leaves and said infolded portion.
2. The combination with the leaves, of a cover therefor, said cover having'a back portion, said back port-ion having a folded part inserted from the back in between the leaves,
and securing means passing through the cover, ends of the leaves, and said infolded part of said back-portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
