STRIKE-PLATE FOR DOOR-LOCKS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM SAMUnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strike- Plates for Door-Locks, of which the followingis a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to what are'known as strike plates or nose plates for door locks and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be used in connection with doors and the locks thereof when said doors are hinged in frames of different form or construction in transverse section, and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a transverse sectional view of one side portion of a door and one side portion of a door frame, the door being provided with a lock and the frame being provided with my improved strike plate which is also shown in transverse section Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. l but showing another use of my improved strike plate and showing a modified form of door frame ;-Fig. 3, a perspective view of one part of my improved strike plate ;and, Fig. 4C, a similar view of another part thereof.

In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a a transverse section of a part of a door and said door is provided with a lock Z) having a spring bolt provided with a beveled nose 0, and it will be understood that these parts are all of well known form and construction. I have also shown at (Z atransverse section of one side of the door frame and to which is secured my improved strike plate f, in connection with which the bolt of the lock or nose 0 thereof operates.

My improved strike plate f consists of two partsg and h and the part 9 is shown separate in Fig. 3 and the part it in Fig. 4:.

door frame shown in Fig. 1 is finished plain on the opposite sides thereof or is provided with plain strips or boards (Z while in Fig. 2 the door frame is provided with ornamental side strips or boards (l3 which are much thicker than the strips or boards (Z shown in Fig. 1, and this makes the sides of the door frame also thicker, and the front corner edges of the strips ,or boards shown in Fig. 2 are beveled or rounded as shown at (Z and it is to accommodate these two different forms of door frame construction that my improved strike plate is provided.

The part 9 of the strike plate shown in Fig. 1 is composed of a main curved plate portion the back top portion of which is provided with a yoke shaped transverse member 9 and the plate member 9 is provided centrally with an aperture 9* at the bottom of which is an outwardly and up wardly inclined plate 9 which projects against the bottom edge of the yoke shaped member 9 and centrally thereof and the plate g is provided with a screw hole g. The bottom edge portion of the plate member g is also provided with screw holes 9 and when my improved strike plate device is desired for use in connection with a door frame formed as shown in Fig. 2, the part 9 only is used, said part 9 being secured to the door frame, as shown in said figure, by means of screws 9 passed through the screw holes 9 and g and no cutting of the door frame molding strip or strips (Z is necessary except possibly to form a slight inclined surface at d instead of the ordinary surface at this point which is segmental or circular in cross section.

The part 72. of my improved strike plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 is yoke shaped in form and comprises a base portion 71. and an upwardly inclined portion 71?, and the base portion 72, is provided with an inwardly directed base plate h and the portions 72. and 72. or the side parts thereof, are curved or beveled as shown at 725 so as to fit a corresponding curve at the bottom edge of the yoke shaped member 9 of the part 9, and the part it is provided at the corners thereof with lugs or projections h which fit in the corresponding corners g of the part 9 when said parts 9 and h are put together as shown in Fig. 1.

The strike plate f as shown in Fig. 1, or the parts 9 and h thereof are secured tothe look by turning the knob 7', after which the door may be opened, and when the door is closed the nose 0 of the bolt strikes the outwardly curved portion 9 of the plate member 9 and is forced backwardly into the lock case, and when the door is fully closed the said bolt is projected and the ends thereof passed into the strike plate through the opening 9 From the foregoing description, it will be seen that my improved strike plate device is provided with a head which projects beyond the side of the door frame or jamb when in use, and this head consists of two separate parts, one of which is used separately in connection with a thin door frame or jamb, or a door frame or jamb provided with thin facing strips or boards, while both of which are used together in connection with a thicker door frame or j amb, or a door frame or jamb having a different style of finish, or thick molding strips for a finish.

My invention is not limited to the exact shape or form of the different parts of my improved strike plate and the method of connecting said parts as herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

In the accompanying drawing, the frame constructon shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with a central filling 7c of wood, or other suitable material, but it is customary to make these frames in the form of boxes or without a central filling, and when made in this manner, in applying strike plates or nose plates of certain forms, it is necessary to cut into the corners of the frame so as to countersink said strike plates or nose plates, and these cuts frequently extend into the open space in the frame and this leaves an ugly hole to be filled up in case it becomes necessary to change the lock or the strike plate or nose plate, and also leaves nothing into which the screws for securing the said strike plate or nose plate in position can be passed, but with my improvement, it is not necessary to cut the frame to any considerable extent, all that is necessary being to countersink the lower end of the plate g in the face of the frame, as shown in Figs.

1 and 2, and possibly to bevel the corre-' sponding side or mold plate (Z as shown in Fig. 2.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A strike plate device for door locks adapted to be secured to the face ofthe door frame or jamb, said strike plate device being provided with a head which projects beyond the door frame or j amb when in use r and which is composed of two detachably connected parts, both of which are used in connection with a door frame or jamb of one style of finish and construction, and only one of which is used separately in connection with a door frame or jamb of another style of finish or construction.
