EMOGEN'E W. SEVERE, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
FORM FOR MEASURING DRESS-SKIRTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Januaryeo, 191i.
Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Serial No. 605,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMOGENE W. Snvnnn a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Voodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Measuring DressSkirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to forms for measuring dress skirts.
The object of the invention is the provision of means foraccuratelyand readily measuring and adjusting the skirts of ladies dresses in order that they may be cut at the proper and desired length.
It is well known to those engaged in fitting and selling ladies dresses that no means exists for fitting the skirts the proper length by hand measurement. I am aware that various devices have been conceived for this purpose, but the one here described constitutes an improvement upon any in use in the simplicity of construction and effectiveness of operation.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view of the same in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line wy, Fig. 2.
In the drawing A is a cylindrical box with a bottom a and is made of wood, metal or other suitable material. In the bottom of the box two foot-prints or places for the feet I) are secured in such position that the model or customer stands directly in the center of the box. The box is screw-threaded upon the outer surface for the adjustment of a. circular, internally threaded rim or platform B, adapted to turn upon the box and be raised and loweredas desired. The foot prints are of the same height as the top of the platform when the latter is at its lowest position or, the bottom of the platform is even with. the lower surface of the bottom of the box. The threads on the box and platform are of a certain pitch, such as one-fourth of an inch, so that one revolution of the platform will raise it this distance upon the box. Near the out-er edge of the platform a vertical rim C is secured, parallel with and encircling the box. Between the rim C and the outer edge of the platform B is a groove 0 adapted to be filled with powdered chalk. In the groove rests a bail d encircling the rim C and intended to be covered with the chalk to mark the skirt.
The operation of my invention will be readily'understood. The model or customer will take her place within the box with her feet in the foot prints, the skirt falling over the rim 0 and upon the outer ledge of the platform B. The platform and rim are then raised to the required height; if the skirt is desired to be out twoinches from the floor and the threads are one-fourth of an inch pitch, the platform is turned eight revolutlons. A line or mark C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, upon the side of the box and on the upper edge of the rim C, indicates when a revolution is completed. The bail d, which has first been removed, is then adjusted over the head of the customer and laid upon the edge of the skirt as the skirt rests upon the ledge of the platform. The chalk upon the bail marks the goods, and the skirt upon removal may readily be out upon the marked line. Colored chalk may be used to mark white or light colored fabrics.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A form for measuring dress skirts consisting of a cylinder screw-threaded upon its outer surface, an internally threaded rim or platform adapted for-adjustment upon said cylinder, a vertical rim secured to said platform and freely inclosing the cylinder, the platform having a groove near the outer edge outside the vertical rim, substantially as described.
2. A form for measuring dress skirts con sisting of a cylinder having screw threads upon its outer surface, foot prints for adjusting the feet in the central part of the cylinder, an internally threaded rim or platform adapted for adjustment upon the cylinder, a circular, vertical rim secured to said platform near its outer edge and freely encircling the cylinder, the platform having a groove outside the vertical rim adapted to be filled with a marking powder, and a ring or bail resting in said groove and adapted for marking the fabric of the skirt, substantially as described.
3. A form for measuring dress skirts consisting of a cylinder having screw threads upon its outer surface, a rim or platform screw-threaded upon its inner surface and adapted to turn upon the cylinder, a vertical rim secured to the platform and inclosing the cylinder, the cylinder and rim being marked to indicate the revolutions of the rim upon the cylinder, the platform having In testimony whereof I have hereunto a groove near its outer edge outside the v'er a flixed my signature in the presence of two tical rim adapted to contain a marking sub subscribing witnesses.
