Abstract

A method for contact-less ultrasonic control of metal articles with pulses of surface waves includes mechanical scanning of the article with electromagnetic-acoustic transducer in its middle section and simultaneous scanning with search ultrasonic pulses of surface waves excited by means of that very electromagnetic-acoustic transducer, reception of ultrasonic pulses reflected from defects of surface of the article or elements of the surface of the article, and analysis of quality of the article by characteristics of received ultrasonic pulses. Search ultrasonic pulses of surface waves are excited simultaneously in two opposite directions. Upon detecting the signal reflected from a defect one terminates excitation of bi-directed ultrasonic pulses with excitation instead of those with alternation of unidirectional ultrasonic pulses by one of directions determined before. Value of the defect and its coordinates are determined by characteristics of received unidirectional ultrasonic pulses.
