I 訂 綠 (請先酊讀絷面之注意事項再4寫本頁) 經濟部中央標準局員工消費合作社印製 438999 A7 _ B7 五、發明説明(3 ) 持-反強介電性液晶單元,且其中的一偏光板的偏光轴係 大致與不加電壓時平均的AFLC分子之方向一致。如上述 般地設定偏光板後,則可使一反強介電性液晶板於不加電 Μ以黑顯示;而加電壓時則以白顯示。利用AFLC的驅 動模態的特徵為:⑴具有作為安定相位的反強介電相位 、(2)具有作為準安定相位的強介電相位,及利用兩向位 之間的相位轉移過程》AFLC板的白顯示即是意味加一電 壓,而使顯示自反強介電相位相位轉移至強介電相位。 就一強介電性液晶板而言:至今用以作為顯示品質基 準的參數為主動分極量PS、及電氣傳導度〇等。發明者係 以該等參數為中心來加以討論。為使其關係更為明顯,發 明者乃進行含有高頻的介電率測定,並且檢討液晶特性間 的關連。 測定介電率的手段原理係自古以來所周知,其中,如 強介電性液晶或是包含AFLC的介電率、高頻成份的解析 例已由木村、早川的小組(例如Jpn.J Appl phys 32(1993) 4571 Uq.Cryst_· 14(1993) 427)、或是折原、石橋的小組( 例如;T.Phys Soc.Jpn,64 (1995) 3188固體物理31(1996))等 多數論文中揭示。該手法之特徵為•先將單一頻率的正弦 電壓加至一強介電性液晶或是AFLC上,再測定、解析當 時所輸出電壓的基本波及高頻成份。兩個小組均是針對液 晶單元厚度之厚的領域測定。然而’遺憾的是,其係集中 在輸出電壓的奇數次高頻解析’而對於偶數次高頻的檢討 則全無。吾人即是根據此一狀沉,而著眼於奇數次高頻及 本紙張尺度適用中國國家榇準((:师)八4規格(21〇/297公釐) (請先^讀"-面之注意事項再4'寫本頁) 訂_ -6 ** 438999 A7 B7 五、發明説明(4 ) ~ 偶數次咼頻兩者,進而進行檢出左右液晶板特性要因的實 驗。以下係說明有關測定介電率之方法及原理。 在考量將一交流電壓作為一輸入電壓而加於一試材上 時的輸出電壓波形時,作為評價輸出電壓波形之方法有·· 以時間軸來觀測測定结果的方法、及以頻率領域來觀測的 方法。該兩種方法係可相互地依某種變換將時間軸變換成 頻率軸、或是其相反的變換。此種變換如傅利葉變換、或 是可進行極高速變換的高速傅利葉變換(FFT:Fast F〇uder Transform) ° 第1圖係表示以時間軸所描繪的輸入電壓波形(驅動頻 率100Hz),第2圖係表示將示於第1圖中的輪入電壓加於一 試料中’而於時間轴上所測定的輸出電壓波形的模式。由 第2圖的輸出電壓波形觀之,其波形係由何種波形所形成 並未可知。然而將此一時間軸波形作FFT變換後,如第3 圖所示即可分離出基本波形(100Hz)、2倍頻率(200Hz) 及3倍頻率(3〇〇Hz)等3種電塵波形成份。對於這3種電壓 波形成份而言,若分別注目於頻率及強度後,即可得到第 4圖。特別一提的是,若將輸入電壓波形的頻率令為识後 ,則觀測所得之2倍頻率即為2W成份、3倍頻率即為3|成 份、N倍頻率即為NW成份’分別稱為2次高頻、3次高頻 、及N次商頻。 …以下將說明有關介電率的測定原理。當£係表示介電 率E係表示電%、Ps係表示..主動分極量時,則介電通量 密度D即可以下列方式表式: 本紙張从適财闕家轉(CNS ) A4^ ( 21Qχ 297公疫 ---- (請先Μ·讀背S之注意事項再4·寫本頁) -Τ 、1'· 線- 經濟部中央標準局員工消費合作社印製 -7- 438999 A7 B7 經濟部中央標準局貝工消費合作社印製 五、發明説明(5 ) D=sE+Ps 此外,由於介電通量密度D係為單位面積的電量q, 所以在將一電場E加於一面積已知的介電體,且測得當時 之電容量C時,即可決定介電率。 D=q=C · V=sE+Ps
s=q/E-Ps/E 對AFLC而言’由於所加之電'壓在較小的範圍内匙時 ,其主動分極量Ps係趨近於〇,故右邊第二項可視為〇。因 此,介電率ε即可定義為電場£對電量q的比值。也就是說 ,介電率ε的測定係必須在該定義成立的電壓範圍内β由 於使主動分極量Ps係趨近於〇的電壓範圍係依八1^(:而異, 故於實際介電率測定時’每一成為測定對象的材料均須破 認所加之電壓係可使E與q保持直線的關係。 有關AFLC板特性的測定方法已詳述於|?err〇eiectrices (1993,voll40,pp255)t。以下將依第5圖來作一簡單概述 。當一電壓加諸於AFLC板時,隨著AFLC分子的相位轉移 過程’該板的透過特性係呈第5圖所示般的對比特性。值 得一提的是’陣列驅動時的板特性係依選擇電壓V—s、 保持電壓V—b及其加壓時間來決定。第5圖中係只表示正 電壓時的板的透過特性,然而負電壓時的板的透過特性亦 具有相同的對比特性。 對比特性的定義係為:充份加電壓之強介電狀態的透 過率T—w(白狀態)與反強介電狀態之透過率(亦即電壓為〇 的透過率T_b(黑狀態))的比。該比係為提升人的視別性 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS ) A4規格(210X297公釐) (請先阶讀背、面之注意事項再填寫本頁〕 訂_ 經濟部中夬標準局員工消費合作社印製 438999 a? ________ B7 五、發明説明(6 ) 的一大特徵之一,其中該比值越大則視別性越好。 此外’ AFLC的響應特性係包含有:自反強介電相位 (AF)至強介電相位(F)的相位移轉時間t(AF+F)、以及相反 地自強介電相位(F)至反強介電相位(AF)的相位移轉時間 t(F今AF)。 第6圖係為強介電性液晶單元的構成圖。圖中,諒液 晶單元係包含有一強介電性液晶層10、一對玻璃板i la、Ub 、及用以黏合該玻璃板封蠟材12。該等玻璃板lla、llb的 對向面上係分別形成有一電極13a、i3b,且該電極上係分 別塗有一高分子配向膜丨4a、14b。此外,該等玻璃板ila 、1 lb的外側係分別設有一偏向板15a、15b。 於第6圖中,d孫表液晶單元的厚度。當令沿液晶分子 長短軸方向之折射率的差(折射率異方性)鈕時,則光程長 度係為折射率異方性Δη與液晶單元的厚度d的乘積。 (實施例) 為測定將一單一頻率之正弦波電壓加於一反強介電性 液晶單元時的輸出基本波及高頻成份’因而製作了如第7 圖的電路圖》圖中所使用的液晶單元係:玻璃板上係鍍有 一厚度為300唉的聚醞亞胺,且將該液晶單元加熱至1〇〇度 C,而利用真空注入法將aflC材料注入。 當液晶厚度設為Γ·5μπι,且光程長度設定為22〇n m 後’再將該液晶單元如第7圖所示般地配置,即進行介電 率測定。第7圖中,1係表具有基準頻率的、電源、與該電源 1所串接的是液晶單元2及電容量已知的標準電容3(cre〇 « · . 本紙張财關家鄉(CNS)从祕(2削297公瘦) — (請先"-讀背赶之注意事項再春寫本頁) ,嚷- -訂· · -9- 經濟部中央椋準局負工消費合作社印製 4389 9 9 A7 __._B7_ 五、發明説明(7 ) 。此時,測定該電路構成中標準電容3兩端所呈現的微小 電壓δν。值得一提的是當Cref之電容量係設定為液晶電 容量的500〜1000倍時,所加電壓係幾乎全加於液晶層。 此時,流入液晶單元的電荷Δ q = δ V Cref。此外,自電源 1加一峰值電壓一定的正弦波電壓於液晶單元中,再依次 地隨著基準頻率的變化來測定輸出電壓AV,以及測定流 入電荷Δ q的變化。然後再如前述般地,將由流入電荷A Q的變化所得之输出電壓的一周期份進行傅利葉變換,據 以進行基本波與高頻的成份分析。 該液晶單元的輸出電壓的2次高頻(2 W )、3次高頻(3 W)、4次高頻(4W)、5次高頻(5W)等成份的強度係示於第 8圖中。圖中,〇係表示作為基準頻率的100Hz電壓、□係 表示作為基準頻率的1kHz電壓、而今係表示作為基準頻 率的10 k Ήζ電歷。由此結果可知,該液晶單元的輸出電 壓係為基準頻率的奇數倍(W,3W,5W...),及偶數倍(2W ,4W...)的頻率成份。蟀此,當將一3〇V、lOOps的電壓脈 衝加諸於一可輸出奇數倍及偶數倍的液晶單元時,實際驅 動顯示一 AFLC板後,結果顯示,其在廣視角時具有高速 響應特性、且穫至高對比度,故該AFLC板係具有良好的 顯示效果。 (比較例) 當液晶厚度設為9μιη,且光程長度設定為1320nm後 ,再如上述實施例般地進行基本波與高頻的成份分析。其 結果,2次高頻(2W)、3次高頻(3W)、4次高頻(4W)、5次 未紙張碰適用中國國家擦準(CNS )麟(21〇X赠) ----------^裝-----„--ΐτ----- (#先閱讀f-面之注意事項再4·寫本頁) A7 B7 438999 五、發明説明( 高頻(5W)等成份的強度係示於第9圖中。_中縱軸所示強 度係相對於背景的測量精度,的X下由於與雜訊區別故 無示於圖中。由第9圖可知,只有基準頻率(评)、3次高頻 (3W)、5次高頻(5W)可被觀測,而偶數倍位置的成份則無 法觀測。當將一30V、100哗的電壓脈衝加諸於該液晶單 元時,實際上並無法驅動顯示一 AFLC板,縱使變換各種 的電壓脈衝亦無法進行切換,因此無法達到顯示效果。 以下係檢討有關出現偶數高頻成份時的物理意義。第 1〇圖係液晶單元的斷面圖。第10(幻圖係液晶之人形構造 形成於z=l/2d(d為液晶單元的厚度)位置時的示圖。於第 l〇(a)圖中所示橢圓Pi之z=l/2d處,相對於2回旋軸作18〇度 回旋來觀看該單元時’其構造於回轉前與回轉後之間的差 係無法看出,換言之即是,由上來觀測該單元與由下來觀 測該單元時’其間的差異並無法看出e 此外’在第10(b)圓中’液晶人形構造係沒有形成於 z=l/2的位置,因此,於圖中所示橢圓p22Z=1/2d處,相 對於2回旋軸作180度回旋來觀看該單元時,其構造於回轉 前與回轉後之間的差則可看出。也就是説,回轉後,經曲 折的單元構造係如第10(b)圖中的A與A,般地變化。該種層 構造即可呈現偶數次高頻成份。 第11圖係表示可呈現偶數次高頻成份之液晶單元的另 一構造圖。第11(a)圖中’相對於液晶單元層的上下基板 的角度係依位置之不同而有所不同。cl、c2、c3所示係為 曲折的層構造,在曲折的領域中,係有相當大的範圍會誘 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS ) A4規格(210X297公釐) f. B7 五、發明説明(9 ) 起分子配向的亂象。第11 (b)圖中’橢圓e所示部份係只曲 不折。對該種層構造而言,亦會引起單元的對稱性亂象而 呈現偶數次高頻成份。 由上述可知’常卓元係為以複雜自由形之層構造變化 時,即可偶數次高頻成份。 因此,一種可呈現奇數次高頻加偶數次高頻的液晶單 元係比不能呈現偶數次1¾頻的液晶單元能提供一且有高對 比度的AFLC板。 第12圖係為光學異方體的疊合構造圖,在第1〇、11圖 所示構造中並未考慮垂直基板的軸回轉。然而,如以下所 述’在實際的單元中垂直基板的轴回轉亦會被誘起。光學 異方體的疊合基本構造係已詳述於坪井誠太郎[偏光顯微 鏡]中。在此所論及的間題係為:複數枚光學異方體板(第 12圖所示係3牧)之光學軸均重合(第12a圖)在一起時,以 及錯開(第12b圖)時,所產生的光學差異性。因為液晶本 身亦為光學異方體’故延長此一議題並檢討如下。 第12a圖中所示者係3枚光學異方體1 ' 2、3之光學麵 一致地疊合在一起的構造模式圖。第12圖中的上圖係表示 光學軸一致地疊合在一起的層構造之斜視圖,而下圖係表 示自上方看液晶單元時’光學異方體1、2、3之光學軸的 配向。另外,第12a圖中所示者係光學異方體j與光學異方 體3相對於光學異方體2相互地逆向旋.轉所疊成的層構造模 式圖,上圖係表示相互地逆向旋轉所疊成的層構造之斜視 圖’而下圖係表示自上方看液晶單元時,光學異方體丨、2

、3之光學轴的配向D ; 就第12a圖中所示之層構造而言,相對於單元1/2位置 之橢圓ql、q2之2旋轉軸,以及垂直基板之橢圓q3之2旋轉 軸作180度旋轉時’旋轉前與旋轉後之層構造的差並無產 生。然而’就第12b圖中所示之層構造而言,當相對於上 述2旋轉軸ql ' q2、q3作180度旋轉時,旋轉前與旋轉後之 層構造則產生差。因此,對於第12圖中所示之層構造而言 ’光學軸一致的層構造(第12a圖)係只能觀測奇數高頻, 而由回轉所疊合的構造(第12b圖)係除可觀測奇數高頻外 亦可觀測偶數高頻。 於第12圖中雖已說明有關3牧光學異方體,然其實並 限於3故。 如第10(b)圖、第ll(a)(b)圖、及第12b圖中所示,具 有旋轉或變形的層構造之液晶單元係除可觀測奇數高頻外 亦可觀測偶數高頻。以下係說明有關呈現偶數高頻之範圍 與光程長度間的關係。 第13圖係表示光程長度與偶數高頻成份間的關係圖。 其中橫轴係為光程長度,縱軸係為偶數次高頻成份對基準 頻率成份的比。由第13圖可知,光程長度在8〇〇nin内係可 呈現高頻成份,但800nm以上,則會落到1〇-6以下的級次 ,此就測定精度而言則會與雜訊無區別。此外,當光程長 度比800nm還長時,則會降低偶數次高頻成份,同時會在 實際顯示時產生付色現象’且亦必須使用能區使其驅動的 高電壓。 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS > A4規格(210><297公瘦 ----------第 I. n J 訂· H ^ (请先軋锖背•面之注意事項再4-窝本頁) -13 - 經濟部中央標準局員工消費合作社印製 r. 43 8 9 9 9 A7 ------- ------‘____B7 五、發明説明(11 ) 第14圖係表示光程長度與液晶單元透過光強度的關係 圖。由該圖可知,當光程長度小於100 n m時,則將無法 識別視覺上的顯示明暗。據此可知’光程長度係定於1 〇〇 〜800nm的範圍内時有最佳的效果。
以下所述係有關光程長度與液晶單元的構造。示於第 12(a)圖的構造與第12(b)圖的構造,其光程長度M • d係不 相同。其係·由於第12(b)圖之層構造的折射率異方性如係 比第12(a)圖之層構造的折射率異方性小的關係。當折射 率異方性Δη越小,則在需要一定大小的光程長度時,其 液晶單元的厚度也就變得越大。例如,就液晶單元厚度為 1 μιη而s ’若Δη不大時則液晶單元的厚度則可變大,例如 變為1.5μιη。因此,液晶單元的生產將較為容易,換言之 ’就可呈現偶數次尚頻之層構造的液晶單元,即第12(b) 圖所示之構造(包含第10(b)圖 '第ll(a)(b)圖),係可在穫 至相同光程長度下將液晶單元的厚度變大。 承上所述’藉由本發明之反強介電性液晶單元,除可 保持原有高速響應特性及高視野角特性外,更可改善對比 度。此外,由於可加大液晶單元的厚度,故可使其製造更 為容易。 本紙强:尺度適用中国國家標準(CNS ) Λ4規格(210X297公釐) (請先聞讀背面之注意^項再填寫本頁) -裝. -線 -14-
