Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of producing polyether by subjecting reactant compounds to a polymerization or condensation in the present of a solid acid catalyst, in which with the use of the catalyst which the aged deterioration in catalyst performance is inhibited, the required amount of catalyst is reduced and the polyether having a narrow distribution of molecular weight can be long-term steadily produced in a high conversion rate. In the present invention, the solid acid catalyst having a surface hydroxyl group is supplied to the polymerization or condensation after contacted with an organic compound and/or inorganic compound capable of reacting or interacting with said surface hydroxyl group and other than the polyether. With the hydrophobic group from the organic compound and/or inorganic compound bonded on the surface hydroxyl group, the hydrophobic property of the catalyst surface can be increased so as to inhibit the possible bad influence of water on the catalyst and the aged deterioration in catalyst performance. Because the reactive surface hydroxyl group has been bonded with the hydrophobic group thereon, the bonding or interaction between the reaction product of polyether and the surface hydroxyl group can be inhibited and the aged deterioration in catalyst performance is also inhibited.
