Abstract
This invention relates to a cyanine compound represented by the following general formula (I), which is excellent in light resistance and solubility and is suitable for use as an optical element. Also provided are: an optical filter which employs the cyanine compound and is suitable for use as an optical filter for image displays; and an optical recording material which contains the cyanine compound and is suitable for forming an optical recording layer for optical recording media. (I) [In the formula, ring A1 represents an optionally substituted benzene or naphthalene ring; B represents a group represented by the general formula (II) or (III); R1 represents hydrogen, C1-8 alkyl, or C6-30 aryl; and Y1 represents hydrogen, a C1-30 organic group, or a substituent represented by the general formula (IV), provided that at least either of Y1 in the general formula (1) and Y2 or Y3 in B is a substituent represented by the general formula (IV).]
