Abstract
A novel structural design is invented to dynamically modulate mass exchange between two vortices developed within the micromixer, which results in superior mixing performance. This apparatus has two inlets, a mixer channel and an outlet. Two different fluids flow in from macro flow field through inlets, then, mix in the mixer channel and flow out via outlet. In the mixer channel, there are patterned grooves on one of the wall surfaces and obstacles in the other wall. This design reorients flow pattern and generates helical motion flow and also dynamically modulate mass exchange between two vortices developed within the micromixer. The analysis shows that in a short distance from the entrance two fluids mix completely. The apparatus is a passive device and does not need any extra power to enhance mixing. The apparatus is applicable for 1ab-on-a-chip or micro total analysis systems.
