Abstract

The apparatus includes a pressure-controlled fluid control valve for transmitting a flow of liquid from a fluid supply piping system into a sprinkler piping system of a fire protection system while switching the fire protection system from a standby state to an activation state. The control valve defines a valve chamber for holding a pressurized fluid to prevent fluid from passing through the control valve. The valve actuator is connected to the housing of the fluid control valve for adjusting the fluid control valve in an inactive state and for automatic and / or manual operation of the fluid control valve. The automatic controllers may be placed in fluid communication with the valve actuator 15 to maintain and control the operation of the valve actuator for controlled operation of the fluid control valve.
Claims (10)
- CLAIMS 1. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30), comprising: a pressure operated fluid control valve (20) having an inlet (22a) and an outlet (22b) disposed along a flow axis (A-A) for controlling a flow of liquid from a liquid supply piping system into a sprinkler piping system upon transition of a t'ire protection system from a stand-by state to an actuated state, the control valve (20) having a valve housing (21) defining a valve chamber (24) for holding a pressurized fluid to prevent a flow of fluid through the control valve (20); a valve actuator (30) including a housing (32) having an interior surface (32a) defining an internal chamber (34) with a central axis (C-C); a first actuator seat (33a) disposed along the interior surface (32a) of the housing (32) circumscribed about the central axis (C-C); a second actuator seat (33b) disposed along the interior surface (32a) disposed and circumscribed about the first actuator seat (33a); a seal member (35) defining a sealed position engaged with the first actuator seat (33a) and the second actuator seat (33b), the seal member (35) further defining an open position axially spaced from the first and second actuator a first port (36a) proximate the first actuator seat (33a) in communication with the internal chamber (34) and the valve chamber (24a) of the control valve (20); a second port (36b) in communication with the internal chamber (34) for providing fluid communication with an automatic control device (80); a third port (360) for fluid communication with a drain line (3%), the third port (360) being in communication with the internal chamber (34), the third port (360) being isolated from the first and second ports (363,36b) when the sealing member (35) is in the sealed position; the third port (360) being in fluid communication with the first port (36a) and second port (36b) when the sealing member (35) is in the open position; and a fourth port (36d) for providing fluid communication with a fluid supply, the fourth port (36d) being in communication with the first port (36a) and in communication with the internal Chamber (34), the fourth port (36d) being isolated from the third port (360) when the sealing member (35) is in the sealed position, the fourth port (36d) being in fluid communication with the third port (360) when the sealing member (35) is in the open position.
- 2. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of claim 1, wherein the valve actuator (30) is secured to the fluid control valve (20).
- 3. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of any one of claims 1 and 2, wherein the t'irst port (363) includes a first connection (37a) located in a first direction toward the fluid control valve flow axis (A-A), the second port (36b) includes a second connection (37b), the third port (360) includes a third connection (370) and the fourth port (36d) includes a fourth connection (37d), the second, third, and fourth connections (37b,37c,37d) being located in a second direction transverse to the first direction, and the second and third connections (37b,37c) being located at an opposed location on the actuator housing (32) from the fourth connection (37d).
- 4. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of claim 1, wherein the valve actuator (30) further comprises a manual reset actuator aligned with the first port (3661).
- 5. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the valve actuator (30) comprises a fifth port (36e) providing fluid communication with a pressure gauge (40).
- 6. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of claim 5, wherein the valve actuator (30) comprises a sixth port (36f) providing fluid communication with a manual release device (50) connected to a drain line (3%).
- 7. Ari assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of claim 6, wherein the fifth port (36e) deûnes a fifth connection (37e) and the sixth port (36f) defines a sixth connection (37f) on the valve actuator (30), the tifth and sixth connections (37e,37f) are disposed along a control valve axis and are located in a third direction transverse to the first direction and the second direction.
- 8. An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the second and third ports (36b,36c) are located adjacent each other and located in the first direction, the third connection (370) being located between the second port (36b) and the valve housing (21).
- 9. Ari assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of claim 8, wherein the valve housing (21) supports a drip funnel (60) and an end of the drain line (39a) from the third port (360) and an end of the drain line (3%) from the manual release device (50) are disposed in the drip funnel (60).

An assembly (10) of a fluid control valve (20) and valve actuator (30) of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the pressure operated control valve (20) includes a diaphragm (26) that defines a neutral chamber. wherein the pressure operated fluid control valve (20) further comprises an alarm system coupled to an alarm port in fluid communication with the neutral chamber. wherein the valve Chamber (24) defines a central valve Chamber axis perpendicular to and intersecting the flow axis (A-A) to define a plane, the port of the fluid control valve including a connection extending perpendicular to the plane. 13. A fire protection system (100) having a stand-by state and an actuated state, the system (100) comprising: a liquid supply piping system (100a) for supplying a liquid under a liquid a sprinkler piping system (100b) being filled with a gas under a gas pressure in the stand-by state; a pressure operated fluid control valve (20) for controlling a flow of liquid from the liquid supply piping system (100a) into the sprinkler piping system (100b) upon transition of a fire protection system from the stand-by state to the actuated state, the pressure operated fluid control valve (20) including a Chamber for holding a pressurized fluid to prevent a flow of fluid through the control valve; and a valve actuator (30), wherein the control valve (20) and valve actuator comprise (30) the assembly of any of claims 1 to 16.
