The acetylation process described permits the production of acetylated wood having a higher degree of acetylation, i.e. an acetylene content of at least 20% by weight. The acetylated wood also has a low acetic acid content, in particular, less than 1% by weight. The invention is particularly useful for the industrial scale acetylation of solid wood, preferably timber beams.
