Soda-lime glass is excellent for this application, as the glass is malleable above this temperature while the silicon remains elastic. The glass is forced into the shape dictated by the silicon beyond this temperature. This process relieves any stresses that might otherwise occur in the glass or film as long as the temperature is above the strain point. When the glass is cooled back below the strain point, it becomes progressively stiffer, and stresses begin to form in the film and glass. If cooled slowly, the stresses in the film and glass can be controlled by selecting their appropriate coefficient of thermal expansion relative to that of silicon, particularly those with a linear expansion coefficient in the range of 4-10 parts per million/°C below the strain point.
