Description

The main element of the cathode device of electrolysis cells for the production of aluminum is the coal plate. This design is electrically inherent in a number of disadvantages.

1. The formation of carbide from the interaction of aluminum with coal hearth leads to a decrease in current efficiency, local overheating, destruction of coal hearth, shorten the life of the bath and carburizing electrolyte during decomposition of carbide.

2. Impregnation of the coal hearth with electrolyte, accompanied with loss of electrolyte for impregnation, change in the composition of the electrolyte, loss of contact with the current-carrying rods, destruction of the hearth and reduction of its service life.

To eliminate the above drawbacks of the design of electrolytic cells with a coal stove, it is proposed to use a cast steel or a welded pallet in the form of a shallow trough equipped with vertical steel stiffeners at the bottom as the bottom of the bath.

The drawing shows a longitudinal section of the proposed electrolyzer.

2.The electrolyzer is filled with electrolyte 1, in which the anode 2 is immersed.

Жидкий алюминий располагаетс  непосредственно над слоем свинца толщиной 3-5 см, лежащим на дне поддона и служащим рабочей поверхностью катода; это полностью исключает возможность воздействи  алюмини  на железо .The bottom of the electrolysis cell comprises a steel pallet 3 with vertical stiffening ribs 4, to which iron tires 5 are welded to supply current. The walls of the pallet 3 are lined with carbon, magnesite or other blocks 6 inside. The bottom support of the pallet 3 is brick masonry 7, provided with grooves for the ribs 4 stiffness and tires 5. On the outer sides, the pallet is surrounded by a layer of thermal insulation 8, enclosed in a light iron casing 9. Liquid aluminum is located directly above the lead layer, 3-5 cm thick, lying on the bottom of the pallet and serving as cathode surface; this completely eliminates the possibility of aluminum affecting iron.

Subject invention

4.A lead cathode electrolyzer for the production of aluminum, characterized in that a steel pallet 5 is applied as a bottom, to which current is supplied through stiffening ribs 4.
