Description
For some industries based on nitrocellulose, nitrocellulose is needed, giving low viscosity solutions. This is especially true for the production of nitro lacquers, where a sufficiently concentrated and low viscosity solution is required to obtain a benign film and to mechanize the process, since in this case the film can be applied by spraying.
Methods for the preparation of such nitrocelluloses are based on the treatment of finished colloxylins.
To obtain low viscosity colloxylins abroad (in Germany and Lmerick), a method of treating fiber nitrates with water under pressure is used. This method, which gives perfect results, requires either a large number of autoclaves or a complex circulation system in stainless steel pipes under pressure (the Millikan method). In our Union, the treatment of nitrocellulose with aqueous solutions of ammonia is most often used. This very effective method of reducing viscosity unfortunately leads to a strong yellowing of the nitrocellulose, especially at those concentrations of ammonia, in the order of 0.2%, which must be applied to a sufficiently strong decrease in viscosity. it
0,1%.yellowing is not eliminated by subsequent bleaching if the ammonia concentration exceeds 0.1%.
The author has found a new method that allows to obtain a strong reduction in viscosity using the simplest equipment such as vats for hot washing and almost without discoloration of nitrocellulose.
To achieve this effect, it is sufficient to boil the nitrocellulose in a concentrated salt solution, the boiling point of which at atmospheric pressure would be 120-130 °. Solutions of potassium nitrate or its mixture with sodium nitrate are especially suitable for this purpose, since these salts, as experience shows, are relatively easy to wash off nitrocellulose. The processing time is much longer than with pure water, since the effect of high temperatures is reduced in concentrated saline; to achieve a sufficiently strong decrease in viscosity under laboratory conditions, it was necessary to boil for 6–10 hours.
Example. A colloxylin with a nitrogen content of 11.4% is baled with a KNO solution with a boiling point of 120-122 °. After a 10-hour treatment, the viscosity of the% acetone solution (according to Ostwald) is reduced about 10 times. For concentrated solutions, a corresponding decrease will be many times greater than this. Nitrocellulose is obtained with a faint greenish tint that does not reflect on the purity of the films.
