Description
Until now, aluminum is produced by the electrolysis of aluminum in molten cryolite. Electrolysis in the aquatic environment cannot be carried out, since aluminum, with its affinity for oxygen, cannot be separated from the aqueous solution; instead of aluminum at the cathode, alumina lasers will be emitted. since the aluminum takes oxygen from the water at the moment of emission and sits on the cathode as alumina. According to the proposed method, the electrolysis is carried out in an aqueous solution of one of the aluminum salts, the cathode being protected from penetration of the solvent (water) with a diaphragm that transmits current, but does not allow water to pass through. Water-insoluble and non-miscible organic substances of greater specific gravity than water are used as diaphragms. This liquid covers the cathode with a layer from 1 to 3 cm. Methyl iodide, CH3 1, having a specific gravity of 2.3346, or chloroform CHCl3, having a specific gravity of 1.5, is used as diaphragm fluids. Both of these fluids do not mix with water and the current flows well. Voltage on the 4V electrodes; since ampere-hour gives 0.337 g of A1, it will separate from the solution:

The schematic view shown in the drawing for carrying out the proposed method for electrolytically producing aluminum, a bath consists of an iron rectangular tank, at the bottom of which there is a cathode 2 on the insulators /, / the bath is filled with methyl iodide or chloroform; Above, the bath is filled with electrolyte consisting of a saturated solution of aluminum sulphate 12 (804) 3: a mesh anode is suspended on hooks 4. During electrolysis, metallic aluminum is deposited on the cathode, where it is protected from water by a layer of organic compound and therefore does not decompose; the resulting SO4 anion at the cathode with water gives sulfuric acid

The use of liquid diaphragms allows for electrolysis with cheaper raw materials than LLOZ and reduces energy consumption.
According to the inventor's observations, when aluminum sulphate was taken as the electrolyte, aniline layer served as the cathode diaphragm, the latter partially dissolved in the electrolyte, and an excess of aniline formed a layer that is not miscible with water. A cathode is placed in the aniline layer. In time
электролиза на катоде выдел етс водород и алюминий (при опытах алюминий полностью покрыл ровным слоем катодную пластину).electrolysis at the cathode, hydrogen and aluminum are released (in experiments, aluminum completely covered the cathode plate with an even layer).
