Description
Mercury closures with a porous body widely used in vacuum technology to change the pressure of gas inside devices evacuated and separated from the pumping system, so-called Bauer regenerators, often deteriorate due to leakage of mercury through a porous wall, especially in hollow devices working in electrical high voltage installations and, in particular, in X-ray tubes. The reason for the leakage of mercury in most cases is the electrical breakdown of the porous body, forming a through channel of a sufficiently large size so that it can freely penetrate the cavity of the hollow device. The present invention aims at eliminating this disadvantage and consists in the special design of the protective device for the gas regenerator in hollow devices. According to the invention, the space enclosing the regenerator is separated through a series of arbitrary-shaped partitions, which allow free exchange of gases, but at the same time prevent electric charges from penetrating into the regenerator chamber, causing its damage.
The drawing shows a section of the device.
A hollow device 1 (for example, an X-ray tube), equipped with a regenerator 2, is connected to it by a pipe 3, inside of which a hermetically bent tube (partition) 4 is placed, which is open at both ends and communicates the chamber of the regenerator 2 with a hollow device 1. The device of the tube ( partitions) 4 inside the pipe 3, as experience has shown, quite reliably protects the chamber of the regenerator 2 from electric charges falling into it and thereby protects the porous body 5 from breakdown. In this case, the location, dimensions and shape of the tube 4 can be arbitrarily chosen, depending on the conditions of use of the regenerator. The tube 4 (septum), the curved end of which in the drawing faces the vacuum device, can also occupy a position in which this end can be turned in the opposite direction. Sometimes it may be necessary to use two or more such partitions, as described above tube 4, or a series of flat or other partitions (diaphragms) with correspondingly arranged openings in them.
