Description
Existing magnifying devices can be divided into three groups, according to the nature of negative illumination used in them: 1) devices with a capacitor in which the incident on the negative light condenses (is collected) by a special lens system; 2) devices in which opaque or opal glass diffusing light is placed in the path of light from the source to the negative, and 3) devices in which light is scattered upon reflection from the matte surface, the source of which lies away from the optical axis of the lens and rays directly from the source to the negative do not fall.
The nature of the light (condensed or diffused) strongly influences the magnification results. Condensed light produces a hard image and, on the positive side, reveals various mechanical seizures of the negative and dust incidentally on it. These shortcomings are devoid of devices of the third group, working with reflected scattered light. The devices of the second group occupy an intermediate position, eliminating the harmful effects of dust and scratches on the negative, but giving hard images. Despite, however, this very significant drawback, the devices of the second group were widely used due to the fact that, of course superior in image quality, the devices of the third group had in practice two major drawbacks, namely: 1) it was possible to achieve a uniform illumination of the negative (if only its area is not too small compared to the size of the reflecting surface) and 2) these devices required a very long exposure, a disadvantage, which is crucial, especially in the practice of a professional and photo reporter. Thus, the first significant disadvantage of the magnifiers proposed so far with diffuse (diffuse) reflected light is the uneven illumination of the negative. The reason for such imperfections is the erroneous view underlying such devices that for uniform illumination of a negative it is necessary that the lighting of the reflector should be evenly over the entire working surface. Obviously, the rule is valid only for the case when the reflector is a plane parallel to the plane of the negativity and when, thus, all points of the beam are negative.
