Description
Nowadays, both products obtained on a fatty basis — soaps, detergents, pastes, and various products of organic synthesis — are used as detergents. The latter are obtained by more or less complex chemical and technological processes, for the realization of which special installations and various, sometimes expensive, reagents are required. The result of this is that synthetic detergents cannot yet completely displace edible fats in the soap industry for a number of reasons.
A simple technological process is proposed to isolate relatively inexpensive detergents such as alkyl aryl sulfonates from acidic tar obtained by sulfonation, for example, sulfuric anhydride, oil distillates (kerosene, gas oil, etc.), which are as follows.
Acidic tar containing sulfonic acids of aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as a certain amount of resinous substances and sulfuric acid, is treated with toluene or another organic solvent, which extracts the specified sulfonic acids and gums. The extract obtained is treated with hot water, which dissolves sugars, while the gums remain in the solvent. The aqueous solution of sulfonic acids is neutralized with oil or lime until slightly alkaline.
The result is a solution of the calcium salts of sulfonic acids, which is separated by filtration from the precipitated calcium sulfate and treated with caustic or soda ash to convert these calcium salts into sodium. The latter are a detergent that can be used as a component in cooking soap, as well as detergent powders with various active and filling additives, such as soda ash, sodium hexametaphosphate, etc.

If necessary, the resulting aqueous solution of sodium salts of sulfonic acids can be evaporated to a state of syrup, paste or powder; the evaporation should be carried out at a temperature not exceeding 100 ° in order to avoid partial decomposition of the product. Organic solvent can be regenerated and reused.
