Abstract

The angle of incidence relative to the surface of the objected being measured is specially chosen so that any diffuse light from the film does not contribute to the detection signal, whilst diffuse light from surface areas where no film is present does contribute to the detection signal. The dependence of the output signal on distance is compensated for in the receiver optics, so that the output signal within a distance interval becomes essentially independent of distance. Modulated light from a laser is shone onto a surface and the reflected laser light is measured using a detector mounted close to the laser.
