Abstract

An essentially upright and movable measuring device (8) has its top end located a given distance from the fixed structure supporting a measuring instrument (6) above the surface of the medium, and its bottom end is secured to the tank floor (3), preferably at the zero reference point (4). Movement of the fixed structure in the vertical direction is detected as a result of a sensor (10) recording the change in distance between fixed structure and measuring device. The recorded change in distance is used to compensate for the level measurement carried out by the instrument, so that a more accurate value for the level (14) of the medium in relation to the zero reference point is obtained. The measured level corresponds to the distance between the top surface of the medium and a zero reference in the tank floor, and the measuring device comprises a fixed structure positioned above the surface of the medium and integral with the tank floor. An instrument mounted in the fixed structure measures the distance between the instrument and the surface of the medium.
