Abstract

The shoe press (10) nips a web (W) in nip (N) between press shoe (12) and backing roll (16). The shoe (12) extends across the web width and is movable to nip the web (W). A number of articulated loading cylinders (20) have piston members (26) within cylinders (22, 24) to define working chambers (34, 36) pressurized by hydraulic fluid to nip said web. The pistons (26) engage the cylinders at resilient seals (32) and can pivot relative to the cylinder about axes parallel to the web machine direction. In turn, the articulated loading cylinders allow the press shoe to move in the cross machine direction relative to support member (18). An Independent claim is included for: a similar system having multiple articulated loading cylinders with one pressurized chamber containing a floating piston.
