Abstract

A drying apparatus comprises a vessel (3) housing a rotating screw (2) for supplying material along a trough in the base of the vessel, the cross-sectional shape of the trough being adapted to the cross-section of the lower part of the screw. The screw blade has a channel extending through it for transporting a heat transfer medium. Wet material enters through an inlet (6) at one end of the vessel and dried material leaves through an outlet (7) at the opposite end. A central channel in the screw allows material to be returned to the inlet end of the vessel. A second rotating scraper screw (5) is positioned above the main feed screw, coming into contact with it in order to scrape off any material residue.
