Abstract

A skimming vessel (11) lies in the body of water and a water sink (A) is formed within a vessel. Water carrying pollutants flows from surface region of the body of liquid across a skimming weir (12,K) into water sink. Water is withdrawn from the skimming vessel to maintain the water sink and cause water flow and pollutant entering the skimming vessel to proceed downwards and continuously divert to the separation zone (B) and deflected laterally away from the region (A) beneath the water sink to the separation zone. An Independent claim is also included for: an apparatus for separating water and a buoyant pollutant carried by the water includes intake (12) immersible in body of water and defining intake (A) compartment for receiving flow of water and a buoyant pollutant entrained by the water. A pump (19) discharges water from intake to maintain a water sink. A separation compartment connects with intake compartment and is horizontally offset from intake compartment.
