Abstract
A laser shines light onto an object which is reflected back through a lens onto a light-sensitive measuring cell linked to a signal generating circuit, which only sends a signal when an object is detected within a given variable detection region. Light from a laser (26) is reflected by an object (40) through a lens (20), which directs it towards a light-sensitive measuring cell (24). The optical axes (23, 27) of the laser and lens are parallel to each other. The measuring cell comprises an analogue position detector which emits signals indicating the centre point for each beam of light received. The detector is positioned below the focal point (21) of the lens and at right angles to the optical axis (23) of the lens, with most (preferably all) of its detector surface protruding sideways beyond this optical axis. The position of the lens is chosen so that light reflected by an object in front of it is focused onto the measuring cell when the object is at the very limit (30) of the detector region (28). The out ports of the detector are coupled to a signal processing circuit (32, 33) which generates a signal only when an object is detected within the adjustable detector region.
