Abstract

The internal combustion (IC) engine is of the Otto or diesel type with one or more work cylinders with variable geometrical compression ratio, and incorporates, for each work cylinder, a combustion chamber formed between a work piston and a cylinder head with a movable wall for variation of the combustion chamber vol. The wall is formed by a second piston in a second cylinder communicating with the work cylinders. A drive unit is connected to the second piston, which via control components controls the second piston position in the second cylinder at least in relation to the engine crankshaft position and load. The drive unit comprises a hydraulic piston (8), which is connected with the second piston (5), and is accommodated in a hydraulic cylinder (9), which via a valve arrangement (13, 14, 15, 16) controlled by an electronic control unit (17) communicates with a pressure chamber (18) contg. hydraulic fluid and gas under excess pressure.
