Abstract

The method is for use when starting up an auxiliary vehicle heater, whose burner has an absorbent body supplied with liquid fuel. An igniter incorporates a flame-detector cut in at intervals, the variations in its electrical resistance being fed to an evaluator unit as a flame-recognition signal. A voltage (UG) is applied to the igniter for a time period (T3) composed of a first period (T1) being the usual time between starting up the heater and flame ignition, and an additional period (T2). The voltage is then switched off for a period (T4) of three seconds or more. A measuring voltage and current (UM,IM) are then applied to determine the resistance (RM) of the flame detector. T2 can be between 10 and 200 percent of T1, and T4 can be between 5 and 20 seconds.
