Abstract

The gases containing hydrogen chloride and sulphur dioxide are scrubbed in a first stage with an aqueous acidic scrubbing solution to absorb hydrogen chloride and in a second stage with an aqueous alkaline water solution to absorb sulphur dioxide. A part-stream (42) is taken off from the acidic scrubbing solution in a first stage and is regenerated in a secondary circuit (43) by neutralisation (44, 45), separating off heavy metals (46-49) and evaporation (50) to separate off sodium chloride (53). In addition, a part-stream (66) is taken off from the alkaline scrubbing solution in the second stage and regenerated in a secondary circuit (67) by addition of lime (69) for separating off gypsum (71) and addition of soda (73) for separating off excess calcium. The invention is primarily distinguished by the scrubbing solution in the first stage being kept essentially separate from the scrubbing solution in the second stage, the condensate from the evaporation (50) in the secondary circuit (43) of the first stage being returned back to the primary circuit (38) of the first stage and by a so-called indirect lime method being used for the regeneration of the scrubbing solution in the secondary circuit (67) of the second stage. <IMAGE>
