Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a regenerator which is small-sized and inexpensive, and which is incorporated in a high temperature gas engine or a Stirling engine by providing such an arrangement that can satisfy desired objects in the zone of the regenerator even in the case of an engine having a high working gas pressure and a large stroke displacement. CONSTITUTION: An axially flow type regenerator 11 is used so as to withstand a strength problem of high working gas pressure, and in each receiving chamber 17, the regenerator is surrounded at both its inner and outer surfaces by ring passages 19, 20 used for radial inflow/outflow of working gas. In such an arrangement, it is possible to obtain a large working-gas flow cross-sectional area and a controllable strength characteristic within the machine.
