Abstract

A new oil/water separator consists of a vessel (3) with a floor (5) and four walls (7-13), which is divided into three chambers (19,41,35). Between the first (19) and second (41) chambers is a partition (15) which has at least one opening (17) near the floor (5), and between the second (41) and third (35) chambers is a second partition (23) in which a filter element (31) is fitted. A skimmer (43) is provided in the second chamber (41) and can move vertically on the surface of the water. The second partition (23) may be made up of two essentially parallel overlapping plates (25,27), in which case the filter element (31) occupies the space between their central overlapping portions. This filter element is contained in a cage (33) in which it is installed in the above space. The skimmer (43) may be attached to a vertical guide or may float freely on the surface of the water. USE/ADVANTAGE - This method is used for sepg. oil or gasoline from water by means of a disc-skimmer in industrial applications, in sewage works, on construction sites or at the scenes of accidents. Existing oil separators require the oil to be pumped out and taken away on a periodic basis, and a considerable quantity of water is unavoidably removed with the oil at these times. This invention allows the oil to be sepd. in an economical manner and without this disadvantage, and the sepd. oil can be taken away in drums by any suitable transport.
