Abstract

Joining by welding/soldering uses a solder comprising 85-99% zinc and 1-15% aluminium at a temperature of 320-650 deg.C, pref. 320-480 deg.C, with heating provided at least in part from infrared radiation produced from an electrical source. The heating of the base material to welding temp., and the mechanical treatment of the weld surface to remove surface oxide film are also claimed. The method is suitable for joining A1, Fe, copper or their alloys. The use of halogen lamp heaters is a claimed. The welding alloy can comprise 85-98% zinc and 2-15% A1, pref. 95-95% Zn and 3-5% A1; in partic. 96% Zn, 4% A1 with at most 0.5%, pref. 0.15, of other elements. The use of a dispersion of fine particles in the alloy to increase weld strength is claimed. Particle size is less than 0.5 mm, pref. less than 0.1 mm of oxide particles, silicon dioxide, fly-ash etc.. The powder is at most 50% by vol., min. 0.001% by vol., in partic. at most 20%.
