Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for producing powdery, refractory, inorganic compounds and metal compositions comprising mixing a charge consisting of elements of Groups I to VIII of the Periodic Table, and/or their oxides, their halides, as well as of metals of Groups I to III of the Periodic Table and/or hydrides thereof, as well as nitrogen, carbon, boron, silicon, sulphur, phosphorus, and/or the oxides, halides, and organic compounds thereof with additives - oxides of metals of Group II of the Periodic Table and/or halides of alkali metals, and/or ammonium halide, polystyrene, polyethylene, urea - whereafter the mixture prepared is placed into a reaction zone and ignited to carry out a self- propagating, high-temperature synthesis, the product of which is then purified from by-products of the synthesis by treatment with a solution of mineral acids. The present invention is useful, for example, in powder metallurgy. <IMAGE>
