Abstract

A starting material for a foodstuff that has a natural lignocellulose content, broken into pieces by steam, and that is in granualr form, is new. Lignocellulose material, such as wood chip, straw or seed husks, is heated at around 200 deg.C under a pressure of around 20 bars for 1-10 minutes, and then the pressure is reduced to around 1 bar. The resultant expanded material is mixed with conventional foodstuffs and is granulated by passage through a mould, giving feed pellets that have storage properties similar to feeds made using conventional granulating agents. USE/ADVANTAGE - The material is a base for animal feed granules having good physical properties, but without the addition of conventional granulation agents such as lignosulptes.ha
