Abstract
A propeller shaft housing of U-shaped cross section in the vertical plane is divided to form two separate seawater intakes from which water can be taken for cooling the motor. The housing wall is slotted in the area of the forward seawater intake, parallel with the propeller shaft and near the rising end of the shaft, when this is rotating for propelling the vessel forwards, water being both compressed and pumped into the front seawater intake. The housing wall is also perforated in the area of the stern seawater intake so that water is pressed into the latter when the vessel is moving in reverse. There is therefore a sufficient source of cooling water available in all circumstances via at least one of the seawater intakes. The supply lines of the cooling water pump comprise separate branch lines which suck from the seawater intakes, and these branch lines are controlled automatically by means of the vessel's forward steering system. <IMAGE>
