Abstract

Prodn. of 4-(6-methoxy- 2-naphthyl)- 2-butanone of formula (I) is effected by reacting 3-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propionic acid of formula (II), or an alkali metal salt of (II), with a methyl metal deriv. (III). Pref the reaction is effected in an inert organic solvent at reflux temp. when (III) is MeMgHal or at 0-50 deg.C when (III) is MeLi. (II) is used as its Li salt.
