Abstract

N<7>-Substituted mitomycin C derivatives are prepared by 1) deprotonating mitomycin C or an N<1a> substituted derivative thereof such as porfiromycin using a non-nucleophilic strong base to provide the anionic form thereof and 2) reacting the anion with an electrophile. Products include novel compounds which are 7-(3-ethylenedioxypropyl)amino-9a-methoxymitosane, 7-(methoxymethyl)amino-9a-methoxymitosane, 7-(methoxyethyl)amino-9a-methoxymitosane, and 7-(cyclopropylmethyl)amino-9a-methoxymitosane. The compounds are anti-tumour agents.
