Abstract
A luminescent borate matrix has the general formula La, Y Eu<3+> (Mg, ZN)B5O10, wherein the lanthanum may be replaced in part or completely by yttrium and wherein the Eu<3+>, La/Y ions and Mg/ZN ions form linear arrays, the borate ions between then forming two-dimensional lattices in which La/Y ions and Eu<3+> ions are coordinated with 10 oxygen atoms, the Mg/Zn ions being located in an octahedron formed by 6 oxygen atoms, the matrix being activated by M<3+> activators in the place of La/Y ions and M<2+> activators in the place of Mg/Zn ions, M<3+> being Tb<3+> and possibly Gd<3+>, Ce<3+> and/or Bi<3+>, and M<2+> being Mn<2+> or Eu<2+>. Since mutual interaction and disturbance of the luminescent ions is minimal, it is possible to obtain several emission colours (e.g. blue, green and red using Eu<2+>, Tb<3+>, Eu<3+> and/or Mn<2+>). The material is therefore useful in low-pressure mercury lamps.
