Abstract

Atomized metal is made from a source of molten metal which is fed into a vessel in finely divided particles, said vessel having a sidewall terminating in an endwall through which atomizing gas and molten metal are introduced from an external source to said vessel through a nozzle sealed to said endwall, a gas ingress port therein being spaced from side endwall. The sidewall, endwall and nozzle cooperate to seal off the interior of the vessel from the area adjacent the source of molten metal. The metal particles are swept from said vessel using gas introduced thereto through said gas ingress port. Apparatus is disclosed which comprises a vessel (40) having sidewall (42,44) terminating in an endwall (46). Nozzle (32) is provided in endwall (46), said nozzle (32) being connectable to an external source (30) of molten metal. An ingress port (48) is provided in vessel (40) for admitting the collecting gas. Preferably, sidewall (42, 44) comprises a dual wall construction defining a gas passageway.
