Abstract

Paper is prepd. from a slurry of fibres of high lignin content pulp including treating the slurry with 15-25 wt.%, based on oven wt. fibres, soln. of Na sulphite, Na sulphide and Na carbonate having Na sulphite:Na sulphide mole ratio 0.1-2.0:1 at at least 60 deg.C., atmospheric press., pH at least 10, for 10-60 min.. - The paper is made by (a) treating a high lignin content slurry having a predetermined freeness, contg. 1-20 wt.% fibres at least 50% of which are softwood fibres and not more than 3.0% residual cooking chemicals, with the soln.; (b) refining the slurry to enable prodn. of paper having predetermined properties; (c) forming a web from the slurry; and (d) drying the web. The treatment increases the strength of paper made at the same degree of freeness without loss of yield. The web is pref. a high strength top sheet of a liner board. The process may also be used in prodn. of paperboard from corrugating board. - The treatment is inexpensive, residual chemicals can be reused for treatment or cooking, no pH adjustments are required, and strength of liner board prepd. from treated (untreated) slurry is e.g. Mullen strength 124.9 (107.0) psi; tensile strength 79.8
