Abstract
An internal combustion engine spark ignition system component, for self-exciting ionisation commutation of the high-voltage impulse energy, comprises a gas-filled housing (1) of electrically insulating material sealed by two electrodes (3,4) and having an apertured photo-emissive disc (2) in the gap between the electrodes, the disc being at most a third of the gap in thickness, being nearer one electrode (the anode in use) than the other, and having a central aperture equal in diameter to axially aligned projections (e.g. 3a) extending from each electrode (3, 4). An outer metal housing (5) may be provided as a screen. It amplifies the spark, lengthens the working life of the sparking-plug, provides for correct working of the engine under severe conditions and improves engine economy.
