Abstract
A retarder (10) which can be attached to, or near to, a rail (15) of a railway track in order to reduce the speed of a waggon rolling on the track has a hydraulic unit with a braking element (18) which can be moved out of a position in which it lies in the path of a wagon wheel into another position in which it is essentially outside this path and allows the wheel to pass. In order to permit the retarder to be travelled over with as little noise as possible when braking is not required, a holding device (21) with a piston and cylinder unit (25) is provided which can be locked by means of the pressure of a fluid and holds the braking element in the retracted position via an angular lever (57) and a latch (62) after said element has been moved into its retracted position by the first wheel of a wagon section or also by mechanically remotely actuated means. <IMAGE>
