Abstract
A configuration for a nuclear fuel cluster (15) for a nuclear reactor, which permits the clearance for the cold shutdown state to be maintained in conjunction with minimum impairment of the operating efficiency. The nuclear fuel cluster comprises a component made from fissile material, which is distributed over a substantial axial part of the cluster, as well as a component of neutron-absorbing material having an axial distribution which is characterised by concentration in a relatively short axial zone (65) (the control zone for the cold shutdown state), which corresponds to at least one section of the axial region of the maximum reactivity in the cold shutdown state. The axial distribution of the component made from neutron-absorbing material is characterised by additional concentration in an axial zone (62) (of the hot operating control zone). The component made from neutron-absorbing material is suitably inserted into at least a few of the fuel rods (57-G1, G2, G3, G4). The concentration in the control zone for the cold shutdown state can be at least partially created by one or more fuel rods (G2, G3) which have absorbers only in the control zone for the cold shutdown state. The concentration of the neutron-absorbing material in the control zone for the cold shutdown state can be supplemented by reduced fuel enrichment in the control zone for the cold shutdown state. <IMAGE>
