Abstract

The dielectric strength of an irradiation cross-linked, polymeric insulating material of resistivity at least 1 x 10<10> ohm-cm in or for an electric cable is improved by mixing, with the polymeric material, 10 to 40% of carbon black having a particle size in the range 200 to 500 millimicrons. The cable insulation may comprise layers of different density polyethylene, at least one of the layers being said mixture of polyethylene and carbon black.
