Abstract
An electric power cable which is resistant to humidity comprises: a conducting core; a polymeric insulating layer; and a semi-conducting sheath. The latter is made from a high polymer, filled with carbon black, pref. 10-40 wt.% and contains 0.05-4, pref. 0.1-2, wt.% of a silane. The resistivity of the semi-conducting sheath is pref. 100 ohm cm. The silane may be vinyl-tris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane, mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, or N-beta (aminoethyl) gamma aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. It is pref. incorporated in polyethylene or ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer elastomer, and is mixed in with polymer particles after the incorporation of carbon black and before they are extruded. Such cables are used underground to carry considerable power, e.g. 10 MVA. Incorporation of silane prevents progressive migration of water to the insulating layer. Its addn. after incorporation of carbon black prevents the electrical resistance of the semiconductor from rising appreciably. The silane also prevents penetration of water during cable fabrication, as when crosslinking is effected in the presence of water vapour.
