Abstract

Un-gelled hydroxy ester copolymer composition which is essentially free from oxirane functionality and which contains an acidic co-polymer- epoxy resin hydroxy ester reaction product, in which the epoxy resin is a mixture containing at least 5 weight percent aromatic polyethers, which are bifunctional in oxirane functionality, which are consumed by reaction with the acidic co-polymer, and in which the acidic co-polymer is a co-polymer of mono-ethylene unsaturated monomers made in solution, which contains at least about 20percent mono-ethylene unsaturated carboxylic acid, calculated on the total weight of the monomers, in which the epoxy resin mixture forms at least about 40percent of the total resin dry weight content and imparts oxirane functionality in a stoichiometric deficiency with regard to carboxy functionality in the acidic co-polymer of 1:2 - 1:20, in which at least a fraction of the carboxy functionality in the co-polymer- epoxy resin hydroxy ester reaction product is reacted with a base in order to make the reaction product self-emulsifying in water.
